Community Language Skills Workshops
The goal of this workshop is to give the learners the opportunity to learn and practice English conversation at their own speed in an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere.
Learners who have a basic understanding of the English language will benefit from the workshops with improved English language skills and basic skills translating between English and other languages.
Workshops run on Mondays at 3:30pm to 5pm and Tuesdays 5pm to 6:30pm
This participant driven workshop is a friendly, inclusive, informal gathering of adults who want to improve their English conversation skills.
Some previous topics of discussion have been:
- learners’ cultural backgrounds and celebrations,
- Favorite foods and how to cook them,
- how to get around Whitehorse by bus and bicycle,
- housing and employment opportunities in Whitehorse,
- short stories accompanied by vocabulary guides.
Each learner can talk about a topic of interest while the other learners listen. When words or ideas are not clear, we stop to explain/discuss, and then continue. Frequently, translations from the learners’ native languages to English are shared.
Based primarily on conversational English, the workshops explore the multi-lingual diversity of the Yukon through learning and practicing common expressions, greetings and basic linguistics of the many different languages represented by the Yukon’s multicultural population.
Students engage in conversational learning where common expressions such as “thank you”, “hello”, “goodbye”, etc. are learned and practiced in the various languages of the learners who are present. Basic linguistics and communication concepts are highlighted in English and translated into to other languages and vice versa.
Participants can expect to learn common expressions in French, Spanish, Hindi, Ukrainian, and any other languages as may be available though the participants.
