What you will learn

Natural Resource Skills for the Work World (NRSWW) is an upcoming program designed to help Yukoners build the environmental knowledge and practical skills needed to access employment in the natural resource development sector, particularly in mining and mining‑related community roles.

The program focuses on building a strong foundation in environmental literacy, digital skills for data handling, note-taking, and reporting, as well as employment readiness skills, such as resume and cover letter writing and interview preparation.

Participants will gain an understanding of how mining and other resource projects operate over time. Participants will learn about the major stages of resource development—including planning, operations, and closure/remediation—and how environmental monitoring, reporting, and remediation activities fit within each stage. The program also introduces the distinction between active and passive remediation, helping learners understand how environmental responsibilities continue throughout and beyond the project’s lifecycle.

To support employment and career readiness, participants will strengthen their documentation and digital skills, including note‑taking, basic data handling, and reporting. Through collaborations with private and public sectors, the program also aims to connect and prepare learners to potential next steps by identifying specific training, mentorship, volunteer, or employment pathways related to environmental monitoring, mine site support, remediation work, or community‑based roles connected to resource development.

Course Description

Program topics include:

  • Environmental Literacy & Monitoring in Resource Development
  • Mining & Resource Project Lifecycles
  • Introduction to Remediation Practices

• strengthen documentation and digital skills relevant to field note-taking, basic data collection, and reporting.

• identify at training, mentorship, or employment pathway related to land guardianship or environmental monitoring.

• participate in an applied learning activity or mentored exercise with a partner organization (where feasible).
